Today we are going to learn about "Foundation Engineering" which is fall under category of Geo-Technical Engineering . In our previous blog we have learnt How Soil Forms. Hope you are quiet much familiar with the Soil concept .So, lets begin with our Today's Topic  i.e.

In simple words,Foundation is a part of structure that transfer load to underlying Soil or Rock. Foundation Engineering applies the knowledge of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, geology and structural engineering for design and structures of buildings.

Purpose

Foundation of a structure is always constructed below the ground level as to increase the stability of structure.

  • To distribute the weight of structure over large area so as to avoid over-loading of the soil beneath.
  • To prevent unequal settlement.
  • To provide a level surface for building operations.
  • Specially designed foundations helps in lateral Movements.

  How Foundation Engineer Work :

Loads :

The first is to identify the quality and amount of loads that the structure is subjected to. Then these loads are sorted out to Foundation Engineer by Structural Engineer working on same project , by the client . Then Foundation Engineer  need to estimate it.

Report :

Then they make a report by visiting the site . Report includes the observation of the area at which building is going to build , drainage system , and an overview to near by buildings and finaly they came to know the long term effect of soil on building.

Sampling and Testing :

To find properties of soil , sampling and testing is to be done with the collected samples of  site.

Designing  of Foundation :

At the end, Foundation is designed through consultance with client , structural engineer, architect , contractor .
